Belize is an extraordinarily beautiful country located in Central America. It is bordered on the east by the Caribbean Sea, on the north by Mexico, on the west and south by Guatemala. Belize is very unique, since it is the only country in Latin America where English is the official language. You won’t have to worry about fumbling through foreign language books to order a cup of coffee. Belize is a part of the British Commonwealth and enjoys a stable democracy. The government is fashioned after the British system. Prior to the 1960’s, Belize was known as British Honduras. Belize gained independence in 1981.
This is a relatively small country of approximately 8,900 sq miles and a population of about 300,000. The people of Belize are a composition of Hispanic, Creole (African-European), Mayan, European, Garifuna (African-Indian), Middle Eastern, Asian, and Mestizo (mixed ancestry). Many Belizeans consider themselves Mestizo. Although the official language is English, many speak Creole and Spanish, or a combination thereof in their daily lives. Belizeans are by nature very friendly and hospitable.
When speaking of Belize, one cannot help but continuously use the word diverse, for it is truly that. Not only is it geographically diverse, but also in choices of activities to pursue while visiting Belize. On the cayes and coastal areas, there is superb fishing and diving off the barrier reef, as well as relaxing on pristine white sand beaches. In the interior the scene drastically changes to mountains, jungle and lush valleys where several major river systems cascade their way to the sea while supporting a great variety of exotic wild life. Birding, horseback riding, jungle trekking, river tubing, caving, and exploring archaeological sites are just a few of the activities to be enjoyed.
Getting to Belize is very easy, with short two hour flights daily from several U.S. cities to Belize International Airport. From the International Airport there are two domestic airlines offering frequent daily flights throughout Belize. Please review “Travel” for more details.
Gaining entry into Belize is also very easy. Travelers from most countries, including the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, and most European countries do not need a preapproved visa. Only a valid passport and proof of a return ticket is required to enter Belize for up to 30 days. If staying longer than 30 days, you must visit the local Immigration Office for extensions. Extensions for up to an additional 30 days will cost BZ $50 (US $25). This is a simple process and takes just a few minutes.
We are sure you will enjoy the tempo and beauty of Belize and soon learn to understand why Belize is truly a little slice of paradise with a big heart.
